Post-Massage Tenderness
So you just had a fantastic massage and the next morning you wake up and feel sore and tender, what’s going on?
Massage causes a release of metabolic (body) wastes; like dead blood cells, built up lactic acid and other materials; that are stored in your muscles and other soft tissues (skin, fat, fascia.) . Massage increases your blood and lymph circulation, bringing fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients to your muscles and other soft tissues. During this process your muscles are worked out; much like exercising; to help lengthen your muscles, work out trigger points and flush out the wastes from the soft tissues in your body.
Being sore and tender for a short period of time (1-3 days) is very normal. It’s a result of all the waste products being removed and filtered through your body, and your muscles being massaged, kneaded and stretched.
Most people find after the first few massages, the soreness and tenderness is less and less, as your body gets used to the massages.
Drinking lots of water before and after your massage helps the body to flush the metabolic (body) wastes out quicker through your kidneys. This helps prevent soreness and is always recommended following a massage.
You may also try: Ice, Heat or an Epsom Salts bath after your massage to help ease sore areas and tenderness.
